The anus is an external opening and the feces are expelled from the body. There are many small glands on the inside of the anus. If one of these glands is blocked, an abscess-infected cavity may form. Anal abscesses are usually treated by surgical drainage, although some abscesses spontaneously expel. About 50% of these abscesses may develop into fistulas, one of which connects the infected glands in the anus to the opening in the skin around the anus.
